biostrips spring 2014My interest in improving soil health and plant vitality has led me to experiment with the formation of bio-strips. Basically, I am in the process of creating permanent strips of sod alongside beds with a rotating cash crop. Hopefully, the bio-strips will provide habitat for insects and other organisms that help promote a diverse population of life in the field! Other benefits include, helping curb erosion, regulate drought and flooding events and maybe even generate some clippings for mulch. I began by seeding winter rye last year. Once things heat up a little more I will seed buckwheat in these strips, followed by a longer-term seeding mixture of Kentucky Bluestem, Hard Fescue and Dwarf White Clover.
